About Menchas
From the fields of Colombia to the tables of Central Florida, Menchas arepas are Colombian inspired and made here in the U.S.A.
The traditional Arepa dates back to pre-colonization, cooked by the indigenous people of Colombia and Venezuela. It has been a staple and blank canvas of the South American diet for almost 3000 years. Before the corn can be used, it is broken to remove the shell. It is then cooked, ground into a masa (dough), rolled and flattened. Finally, they are grilled to their final form.
Menchas follows the same basic recipe as the indigenous people of pre-colonization, just corn and water. Free of preservatives, Menchas produces the most authentic arepa on the market.
The name Mencha comes from the name of our founder’s great- grandmother. Mencha began a tradition carried out by her daughters, granddaughters, and now her great-granddaughter. The conventional way of making arepas became more streamlined when Luz Acosta, our founder’s mother, came to the United States. Luz established a reputation for having consistently delectable arepas, enjoyed by family and friends in the neighborhood.
After watching her mother for many years, our founder Michelle Acosta decided that it was time to share the family recipe with the modern world. As an homage to her great-grandmother for starting a culinary revolution, the company was named Menchas.
